What is quartz?

Quartz is a popular material. It is made from man-made polymers that make it tough. It is nearly indestructible and is actually harder than granite. Because it is not porous, it does not require any sealing. Therefore, it is easy to keep clean, resists staining and is relatively bacteria free. Quartz should not be used outdoors because long term exposure to sunlight will cause damage.

What is granite?

Granite is also very popular. It is an igneous rock that is composed of interlocking mineral crystals mostly of feldspar and quartz. It is a hard stone and it is resistant to heat, scratches, stains and bacteria if it is sealed. It can have a high gloss or a more low luster or even a honed finish. It is noted that because it is a natural material with distinct characteristics, you must select your specific slab so that you know exactly what you are purchasing.

How does quartz compare to granite as far as cost?

Pricing between quartz and granite can be about the same per square foot, but granite has more of a range of price and can be higher at times. But sometimes quartz can be higher because of the treatment it receives during manufacturing.

What is solid surface material?

Solid surface material is a man-made material. It is non-porous therefore it won’t hold bacteria. It is a low maintenance material used for countertops. It can mimic granite, marble, stone and other naturally occurring materials. It can also be joined together seamlessly to the eye if installed by a professional.

Which material is the most durable?

Although custom granite and quartz are more durable, solid surfaces are hard and impact-resistant. It was created in response to laminate, to achieve a more durable surface.

How does solid surface compare to quartz and granite as far as price?

Solid surface material is notably less expensive than granite and quartz. Installation may be less costly as well.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of laminate countertops?

People are often misled by the idea that there is a difference between Formica and Wilsonart. The truth is they are the same product but are called by different brand names. Both come in a vast variety of colors and patterns and are widely used for kitchen countertops and vanities as well as bar tops. Laminates are non-porous and durable to withstand daily use. Although they are not bulletproof and can scratch, homeowners prefer its durability.

Laminate countertops can last from 10 to 20 years. Scratches and burns account for their demise. There several edge profiles that can add a more finished and luxurious look. The lower cost of laminate countertops can be the most practical and economical way for many homeowners.
